In Perth this usually means intending to grow mostly native plants to reduce contamination of the Swan-Canning River System but many African species find their way in as well. Problem is that plants with a low phosphorus requirement also have a low tolerance to phosphorus and can be killed by unthinking application of too much or the 'wrong' inorganic fertiliser. Animal waste is not recommended at all because varies too much in composition; a problem if you have a dog. Tends to work best closer to the coast where less phosphorus is available naturally in the alkaline soils and plants with a higher demand likely won't do so well there anyway but this is not much help to the River.
